Nice - vieille ville

2010-05-16

I'm French, why do you think I have this outrageous accent?!

Once again I was assigned to blog about a day in which I did nothing (school, nap, laundry...), so I'm cheating and blogging about Saturday, when I went to Entrevaux with Tammy, Sienna, Jared, and Sarah. Also I'm posting this 2 days later than I should. Mes excuses- good internet is hard to find here, as are chunks of time in which to sit and wait for pictures to upload and then edit html. Anyway, about Entrevaux. We took an old rumbly train about 2 hours into the Alps to reach this ancient city. It's special because one side of it used to be France and the other side Italy, with a pre-Roman era citadel still mostly intact. We had lots of fun exploring the citadel and imagining all the different sorts of people and history it has seen, and the views from the top were just breathtaking in every direction!
That night Nice was celebrating la Nuit des Musees where all the museums in the city had special (free!) concerts and exhibits. I went to the Palais Lascaris in old Nice where they were holding a special exhibit on Sebastian Erard, who is responsible for some major innovations in the design of pianos and harps. His inventions essentially lead to the modern harp and piano as we know them today.
In addition to the exhibit itself, the museum was also hosting a concert of harp students from le Conservatoire National à Rayonnement Regional Pierre Cochereau. All the performers were quite young but played beautifully and made me miss my own harp very much.

Drawbridge into the old city- you can see the citadel and the switchbacks up to it in the top left portion of the photo

Pausing on the way up to enjoy the changing vista

View from the top...not the Gwyneth Paltrow movie.

Nous sommes en haut!

Cute little nook we found while exploring the citadel

A prison cell at the almost top used as recently as WWI for German officers

The view out the back of the citadel from the top

Hi Jared!

Sarah at the top, overlooking the view of the city, river, and mountains. Beaucoup a voir!

A mini harp (can't really see the scale here) made for Wagner's orchestra
